Whether you are going through a divorce or you are an unmarried parent, you always want the best for your children. One of the most challenging issues divorced or separated parents must deal with is making child custody and visitation arrangements. When awarding child visitation, the court almost always bases the decision on the child’s or children’s best interest which include but are not limited to; the parents ability to put the child's interest above their own, to provide adequate care and guidance for the child and perhaps most importantly their ability to respectfully interact with the child's other parent ie. co-parenting. Once whichever parent has been deemed the one with custody, child visitation rights permit the parent that does not have physical child custody, to spend time with their child or children. Visitation “time schedules” can be structured or set by the court as part of the custody agreement or left for the parents to agree upon. Once the schedule is made and agreed upon in the court, any changes should be documented and submitted to the court. If the parent with custody interferes with the schedule at all, the parent that does not have the custody may want to seek other ways to continue the relationship.
